POCT (instant detection) is a kind of detection method that is carried out on sampling site and can quickly obtain test results by using portable analytical instruments and auxiliary reagents. POCT is a new subdivision field in in vitro diagnosis industry. The core development goal of POCT is to meet the needs of rapid diagnosis for clinical treatment or home monitoring, so as to obtain reliable diagnosis results quickly and instantly, thus complementation with traditional diagnosis.
There have been many nouns related to POCT. Such as bedside testing, near-patient testing, physicians' office testing, home use testing (household testing), extra-laboratory testing (testing outside the laboratory) and decentralized testing, etc. As the field continues to evolve, these terms no longer sum up the meaning of POCT.
The nouns POCT include point, care and testing. The definition of POCT abroad is "the test required for any medical measure at the patient's medical site. The results of tests not performed in a central laboratory, but at the patient's side, can improve the patient's health care measures ", "Tests developed in a clinical laboratory, but not performed on a patient in a laboratory facility, do not require a fixed, dedicated site. Carry or transport the kits and instruments to the patient for immediate on-site testing."
The main criteria of POCT are that no fixed testing site is required and that reagents and instruments are portable and can be operated in a timely manner. POCT does not require specialized clinical testing services.
In recent years, POCT with miniaturization of experimental instruments, simplicity of operation and real-time reporting of results has been increasingly favored by people due to the development of high and new technology and the progress of medical science, as well as the efficient and fast-paced working mode.
