The World Health Organization (WHO) stressed on 9th of August that the current monkeypox outbreak is not related to monkeys, and behaviors of hurting or even killing monkeys should be stopped.
In Geneva, WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said the increase in monkeypox cases in Brazil was not linked to monkeys, and that "the transmission we are seeing has occurred from person to person."
According to Brazilian media, there has been a surge in monkey injuries in many places of Brazil. Ten monkeys have been deliberately injured or poisoned in less than a week at a nature reserve on the Preto River in Sao Paulo state. Animal rescue workers suspect the situation is related to three confirmed cases of Monkeypox in the area.
As the data of WHO suggested, so far there are 1700 cases of monkeypox infection and 1 cases death of monkey pox in Brazil.
Although monkeypox virus can be transmitted from animals to humans, recent outbreaks of monkeypox in many parts of the world have been transmitted through close person-to-person contact, Harris said. The best way to stop monkeypox is to treat and help people with monkeypox, while taking steps to prevent the virus from spreading, and "never attacking any animal."
Scientists first discovered the virus in a group of research monkeys in 1958 when they developed a "poxelike" infection, hence the name monkeypox virus.
The WHO says a variety of animals can be infected with monkeypox, including squirrels, kangaroos, dormice and several species of monkeys. The natural host of monkeypox virus has not been identified, with rodents being the most likely.
Monkeypox was previously endemic mainly in west and central Africa. Since May, a number of cases of monkeypox have been reported in countries outside Africa. The World Health Organization declared the monkeypox outbreak a "Public Health Emergency of International Concern" on July 23.
